From Skidding to Carving
Ever Wonder How to Carve Better Turns on Your Skis?
Lincoln Phillips, one of our Level 4 CSIA-certified YES Tour coaches, shares his tips for carving better turns.
He emphasizes the importance of maintaining natural alignment to effectively manage pressure while carving a smooth, round arc.
As you move laterally through the middle of the turn, it’s crucial to keep your joints—ankles, knees, and hips—aligned in a balanced fore-and-aft position. Linc stresses the importance of keeping the hip joints working in unison with the ankle joints. This ensures you don’t end up too far forward or too far back on your skis, allowing both edges to carve a clean, round arc from the shovel to the tail, evenly distributing the forces throughout the entire turn.
How to Improve: To enhance your edging skills, practice slip and grip. This exercise helps you become more aware of your alignment as you adjust the edge angle and notice how your body and skis respond.
We hope you find these tips helpful, and we look forward to seeing you on the hill!
